Road Trip to Shores and Islands, Ohio
Maybe it’s a trend. Maybe it’s the economy. Maybe it’s something else entirely, but road trips are currently on top of everyone’s to-do list this season. And trust me when I tell you, if you haven’t considered the Shores and Islands area of Ohio, you’re missing out. Nestled into the Lake Erie area, these locations include Sandusky, Put-In-Bay, Huron, Milan, Kelle’s Island, Vermilion, Middle Bass Island, North Bass Island, Bay View, Castalia, Catawba, Lakeside, Marblehead, Port Clinton, Berlin Heights, Birmingham, Elmore, Genoa, Oak Harbor and Port Clinton.
Between these towns and islands, there is so much to keep you occupied - activities perfect for adults and children - including wineries, lighthouse exploration, animal parks, historical tours, kayaking and hiking, and of course, Cedar Point!
I was lucky enough to explore Shores and Islands earlier this summer and was absolutely blown away by what the area has to offer and all I could think is, “how did I not know this was here?!?” Take a peek at what I took part in, plus a few things I can’t wait to try next time!
Where to Stay - Lake Erie and Sandusky Ohio Hotels
Sawmill Creek Resort: talk about gorgeous, this might top of your list of hotels in Sandusky, OH! This luxurious resort sits on 200 acres of lush woodlands and allows patrons to golf on a world-class golf course, birdwatch in Sheldon Marsh Preserve or take a dip in one of two beautiful pools. Numerous on-site dining options are available all while being a quick 10-minute drive to Cedar Point (take a look at their packages, which include park discounts, here). Beautiful wood panel ceilings and accents give a quaint feel to the 239-room resort which was fully renovated in 2022.
Although I’m not sure I turned on the TV once during my stay, each room does have a 55” LED set, granite bathrooms with walk-in showers and amazingly comfortable bens and linens.
Sandusky Kalahari Resort: This fun location is perfect for anyone and especially those of you with kids. Complete with indoor and outdoor water parks, multiple pools, a ropes course, mini-golf, multiple restaurants, a spa and so much more, you could actually have a “weekend away,” and never leave the resort.

Things to do in Sandusky and the Surrounding Areas
Cedar Point: Ok, ok…your likely already know this. And while you likely know all about the rides they offer, just in case your like me and not a huge ride person, there is still plenty to do to enjoy the park, starting with amazing dining experiences, including the beautiful Grand Pavilion, which overlooks Lake Erie directly. Additionally, you make like to relax in a Beach Bungalow or on a Boardwalk Cruiser Bike or Wine Tour. Splash through Runaway Rapids or enjoy the lazy river on Cedar Creek. They might be known for their roller coasters and thrill rides, but those of us not seeking a thrill can still enjoy the park too!
Midwest Islands: Admit it. When I say “Midwest,” the very LAST thing you think about is islands. But did you know this area has multiple islands, each with a unique group of things to do?
Islands on Lake Erie - Put-In-Bay, Catawba, Kelley’s Island, North Bass Island and Lake Erie Middle Bass Island: Offering a little bit of everything, including wineries, golf (both regular and mini), historical homes, churches and lighthouses, hiking, caves and other natural wonders, plus amazing places to stay and eat, water activities and so much more, exploring these areas is a unique opportunity for Midwesterners.
African Safari Wildlife Park: access this park by taking the Miller Ferry to Catawba, this animal park has both drive-through and walk-through experiences. See zebras, giraffes, a variety of macaws, gibbons and so many more - again, something so rare for the Midwest! I haven’t been here yet, but I cannot wait to soon!!!
While we’re on the subject of Lake Erie Islands, check out Miller Ferry for schedules and transportation information:)
Lake Erie Wineries and Distilleries:
I’ve not visited these BUT, isn’t it nice to know we don’t have to take an expensive California vacation to sample fine wines and other brews? Check out each of the wineries and breweries in the area or participate in the Shores and Islands Cheers Trail to make the experience even easier!

Where to Eat in Sandusky Area
No worries - with a huge variety of tasty spots to eat, you will not starve when visiting this area, but there were a few places I wanted to highlight:
The Maca Root Juice Bar and Eatery: besides a delicious variety of juices, handhelds, salads, smoothies, and more, they are one of the very few places anywhere offering primarily organic, gluten-free, vegan and non-GMO options.
The Keys Put-In-Bay: with a Florida vibe and a variety of foods, you’ll enjoy water views, delicious foods and tasty drinks!
Sandusky Bay Pancake House: they had me at “pancake,” lol. This breakfast and brunch eatery has a great drink menu as well to fully live up while on vacation.
